JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Local police and Talibaninfo-icon militants clashed in the Khogyani district of eastern Nangarhar province on Thursday night, leaving 18 people dead and wounded on both sides, an official said on Friday.

Nangarhar governor’s spokesman Attaullah Khogyani told Pajhwok Afghan News the clash broke out after a group of insurgents waged attack on local police posts in Ghaziabad area of the district.

He said five attackers were killed and eight others wounded in the firefight that left three policemen dead and two others wounded.  Khogyani said bodies of the slain militants remained at the clash site.

A local resident, who declined to be named, said the clash took place about 500 meters away from the district center. He said the incident also involved an insider attacker who fled along the Taliban taking away some weapons.

However, local officials did not comment if any insider was involved.
