US, Taliban resume fresh round of talks in Qatar

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): US and Talibaninfo-icon representatives resumed their peace talks in the Qatari capital Doha last night and would sit again late Friday, a source said.

The source in Qatar told Pajhwok Afghan News the two sides started their latest and ninth round of talks in Doha late Thursday and would resume the talks later in the day until late night.

Ahead of his talks with the Taliban, US special envoy for peace in Afghanistaninfo-icon Zalmay Khalilzad met with Qatari leaders.

The source said decisive talks were expected this time as both the sides had concluded consulting their respective leaders on contentious points in the negotiations.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid also said the ninth round of talks between the two sides resumed in Doha on Thursday afternoon.

He said Islamic Emirates negotiating team was led by Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai and the American side was led by Khalilzad.

He said NATOinfo-icon RS mission commander Scott Miller was also present at the talks. He said the talks would not resume until Friday evening due to Friday prayers.

Taliban’s Qatar office spokesman Sohail Shaheen also said the talks would resume late Friday evening to discuss issues which could not be addressed in the previous meetings.
