Faryab’s Qarghan district falls to Taliban: Officials

MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Local officials say Talibaninfo-icon militants overran the center of Qarghan district of northwestern Faryab province following fierce attacks.

Sibghatullah Silab, Faryab provincial council head, told Pajhwok Afghan News that hundreds of Taliban fighters stormed the district center on Teusday night.

He said that except the district building and intelligence headquarter, all other areas and security posts were overran by the militants.

One upraising group member was killed and nine others wounded during the fight, Silab added.

However, he said that three Taliban fighters were killed and another wounded in airstrikes happened after the fall of the district.

Eng. Roz Mohammad, a provincial council member also confirmed that all key areas of the district, except the security headquarter, were fallen to the militants.

Four security personnel were killed and three others wounded during the fight, he added.

Afghan forces currently retreated from security posts and the district building and are besieged by insurgents in the police headquarter, he added.

A local Taliban member who wished to go unnamed, told Pajhwok that they captured the whole district center except the police headquarter. He said four security personnel were killed and nine others wounded.

He said two Taliban fighters were killed in a drone strike.

A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said that their fighters took control of security posts and the center of Qarghan district of Faryab last night.

A large number of security forces and two Taliban fighters were killed and nine Afghan forces and one Taliban fighter injured, he added.

A ranger pick-up of Afghan forces was destroyed and a large amount of weapons seized by the Taliban, he said.
