PARAKH (Pajhwok): Local officials on Thursday said a weather station and five benchmark glaciers have been installed on the biggest glacier in Parian district of central Panjsher province.

Mohammad Mansoor Anabi, Panjsher governor’s deputy spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the climate monitoring station was installed on Panjsher’s biggest glacier known as Piryakh in Parian district of the province.

He said the station was 4,530 meters above sea level and was installed in cooperation with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the Ministry of Water and Energy.

“This station can measure rains, temperature, humidity and show wind direction, wind speed, sunlight, sunny hours and air pressure.”

Anabi said Piryakh glacier was located south of Parian district in 1.7 square kilometer.

“Besides the weather monitoring system for the glacier, five glacier benchmarks were also installed there,” he added.

These glacier benchmarks monitor the weather 4,500 meters to 4,880 meters above (sea level), he said.

A year back, many people were killed when a glacier partially slid down in Chamar village of Parian district, causing huge damages.
