Western zone rural women display handicrafts in Herat

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Handicrafts made by rural womeninfo-icon in the western zone were put on display at an exhibition kicked off in Herat province on Thursday.

Organizers of the event said their aim was to promote handicrafts made by rural women in Herat, Farah, Ghorinfo-icon and Badghis provinces.

Mohammad Waheed Ibrahimzada, deputy operations head of the Rural Development Program at the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, told Pajhwok Afghan News women’s handcrafts were displayed at 65 stalls at the show.

He said this was the fifth event showcasing rural women’s handicrafts to be inaugurated in Herat City, the provincial capital.

Ibrahimzada said several handmade items were on display at the exhibition and hoped to find domestic and international markets for the handcrafts.

However, a number of rural women, who participated in the exhibition, criticized the government’s unwillingness to support them.

They said they were unable to find buyers for their handicrafts which remained at home without sale. They said the government had no plan for them.

Shah Bibi, a rural woman from Ghor province, said: “Women are masters in and crafting but there is no place to display and sell our products and such exhibitions help us sell our products.”

Zinab Azizi, another woman, told Pajhwok that she used to weave rugs at home and thus meet her family’s needs.

Meanwhile, Sakina Hussiani, a member of the Herat provincial council, said the government must pay serious attention to promotion of rural women’s handicrafts and take practical steps for betterment of their lives and business.
