Pentagon identifies US soldier killed in Kabul blast

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Pentagon has identified an American soldier who was killed in a car bombing in Kabul this week.

Sgt. 1st Class Elis A. Barreto Ortiz, 34, from Puerto Rico, was killed in action on Thursday when the explosive device detonated near his vehicle.

A statement from the Defense Department said Ortiz was assigned to the 82nd Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

He was the fourth US service member killed in the past two weeks in Afghanistaninfo-icon. Thursday's incident is under investigation, according to the Pentagon statement.

On Thursday, the NATOinfo-icon Resolute Support (RS) mission acknowledged losing two service members in the Kabul bombing.

One service soldier was from Romania, the NATO mission said in a statement without disclosing additional details.
