Khalilzad subpoenaed to explain collapse of talks

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A congressional panel has summoned America’s top peace negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad to appear before it next week and explain the collapse of the US-Talibaninfo-icon talks in Qatar.

Eliot L. Engel, chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, said on Friday: “I’m fed up with this administration keeping Congress and the American people in the dark on the peace process…”

Engel signed the subpoena days after President Trump made an abrupt announcement that he had called off peace negotiations with the Taliban.

The talks were scrapped after an attack in Kabul killed 12 people, including an American soldier. Dozens of people were wounded in the Taliban-claimed assault.

According to the Pakistani newspaper Dawn, the subpoena requires Khalilzad to publicly brief lawmakers on Sept 19 on the administration’s plan to end the Afghan war.

Engel voiced anger over the Trump administration’s failure to keep the house and American people posted on the issue

The Congressman said he signed the subpoena after the State Department declined requests in February, April and earlier this month for briefings from Khalilzad on the Afghanistaninfo-icon peace plan.

Engel said: “We need to hear directly from the administration’s point person on Afghanistan to understand how this process went off the rails.”
