KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Former president Hamid Karzai on Thursday urged the Trump administration to resume peace talks with the Talibaninfo-icon.

There has been an uptick in militant-linked violence across the country after President Donald Trump called off the Taliban negotiations last week.

Hundreds of people and security forces have lost their lives to recent insurgent attacks in Kabul, Parwan, Zabul provinces.

Addressing a news conference here, Karzai made a pitch for for the early resumption of the US-Taliban dialogue. He underlined the need for transparency in the parleys.

The ex-president also asked the Taliban to sit with their compatriots for an intra-Afghan dialogue on ways of ending the war and stabilizing the country.

Meanwhile, he urged the government of President Ashraf Ghani to postpone this month’s election and step up efforts for peace.

A credible vote could be conducted only in a free and peaceful Afghanistaninfo-icon, Karzai argued. “In a fair election, All Afghans are supposed to participate without fear.”

How a transparent election could be held in a country where hundreds of people were killed and where election rallies were vulnerable to attacks, he asked.

For its part, the unity government says the peace process would be accelerated after the election, slated for September 28.
