SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): Local officials on Thursday said militant checkpoints have been removed on the Shiberghan-Mazar-i-Sharif highway during a clearing operation.

The route was under Talibaninfo-icon’s control since last one month and the insurgents had installed their own checkpoints on several parts of the highway.

Maj. Abdul Wahid Wejdan, provincial police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the Shiberghan-Mazar-i-Sharif highway was cleared of militants during a four-day operation and the rebels were pushed four kilometers away from the route.

He said three Taliban fighters were killed and 11 others wounded during the operation. Afghan security forces are currently building checkpoints on the highway, he added.

“Afghan officials were unable to travel on this route due to bad security over the last one month, but now even military officers can commute on the highway in uniform from Shiberghan to Mazar-i-Sharif and vice versa,” he said. Wejdan said militants were taking money from drivers on the highway.

Col. Ghulam Haidar, police chief of Khanaqah district of Jawzjan province, said, “Taliban militants have planted bombs in 15 areas of this route.”

He said the rebels destroyed the highway at four locations using excavator. The damaged portions were repaired today, he added.

The Taliban did not comment on the regard so far.
