KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok):  President Ashraf Ghani on Saturday renewed his call for peace, asking the Talibaninfo-icon to declare a ceasefire.

“We will not want war to continue for even a second if the Taliban want peace,” Ghani told senior military leaders in Kabul.

Those refusing to observe truce were responsible for killings and bloodshed, the president said, referring to Taliban’s rejection of his offer.

While reiterating his willingness for peace talks, the president said the Taliban should not think that they could scare the government forces.

Peace could not be restored unconditionally, Ghani explained. “Peace without a ceasefire is impossible,” he maintained,

He added the country was going through a critical phase, amid preparations for this month’s presidential election and peace efforts.

To achieve lasting peace, he stressed, a ceasefire must happen and bloodshed must stop. “War is no solution.”

Ghani believed peace in Afghanistaninfo-icon, once a distant dream, had become a close reality. The best solution to the current crisis was participation in the election he remarked.
