KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): US President Donald Trump says he called off peace talks after the Talibaninfo-icon rejected a ceasefire in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

US media outlets reported on Saturday Trump made the remarks during a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Trump said: “I was completely prepared to meet Taliban but when I realised that they don’t want a ceasefire, I said why I should put in any effort,”

He added the militants thought they would show their power by killing people, especially when they massacred 12 individuals, including an American soldier, in Kabul.

He said that operations against the Taliban had been intensified more than ever before.

Separately, US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad briefed members of the Congress behind closed doors on the collapse of the dialogue.
