KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Physically-challenged people in southern Kandahar province demand implementation of a residential scheme promised during former president Hamid Karzai’s government.

Faizullah Umaryar, deputy spokesman for the Kandahar Disabled Persons Union, told Pajhwok Afghan News that during former President Hamid Karzai tenure, 1,000 plots were promised with them, but the promise remained unfulfilled.

“Former President Karzai issued a decree ordering a township for disabled persons and distribution of 1,000 plots to them, but no practice step could be taken so far in this regard.”

He said no body followed the scheme to support disabled persons who had been ignored and their rights undermined.

Umaryar said disabled persons had met local representatives about the scheme but nobody listened to them and broke their promises of support.

Hameedullah Mubarez, head of Martyred and Disabled Persons Department, said former President Hamid Karzai had issued an order through which 1,000 plots would be distributed among disabled persons in Kandahar.

He said the presidential order clearly mentioned that 1,000 plots would be distributed to disabled persons in areas straight to Kandahar Airport and on the side of Zonal Security Headquarters.

Mubarez said the order was not implemented in the past and now the area had been illegally grabbed.

Deputy Governor Abdul Hanan Munib acknowledged the demand of the disabled people and said the provincial government had been striving to find land for the project.

It is worth mentioning that currently 16,800 people have been registered with the Disabled and Martyrs Department in Kandahar and the government provides them yearly cash assistance from 60,000 afs to 30,000 afs.
