KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan says the Pakistaninfo-icon Army and intelligence service trained Al-Qaeda and other militant groups to fight against Russia in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

Khan made the remarks while addressing a think-tank on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, VOA reported.

In response to a query, Khan said his government had investigated the presence of former Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Abbotabad, but he was unaware of the findings.

He acknowledged the Pakistan military and ISIinfo-icon had trained Al-Qaeda and other militant groups to fight against Russia in Afghanistan.

The PM called Pakistan’s involvement in the Afghanistan conflict after the 9/11 attacks on the US a huge mistake.

“People from Islamic countries came to Pakistan to fight against Russia and were trained in Pakistan by the army and then send to Afghanistan,” he added.

In the past, he recalled, the US hailed the mujahideeninfo-icon as champions fighting against Russia. But now the US slams the same elements as terrorists.

After the withdrawal of Russian, the US left Afghanistan high and dry and the militants fighting there sought sanctuary in Pakistan, he alleged.

About the current conflict in Afghanistan, Khan said the US would not win it even if it fought for another 19 years in the country. He called peace talks the only way of a settlement.
