Fight against Taliban, terrorists to continue: US

Fight against Taliban, terrorists to continue: US

Oct 21, 2019 - 22:35

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): US defense secretary Mark Esper on Monday said his country’s military mission in Afghanistaninfo-icon remained the same and would continue fighting Talibaninfo-icon and other terrorist groups.

Mark Esper arrived in Kabul on Sunday after peace talks with Taliban were paused and violent attacks by the insurgent group and Islamic State militants complicated President Donald Trump’s pledge to withdraw more than 5,000 American troops from Afghanistan.

Esper addressed a joint news conference with Afghan counterpart Asadullah Khaild, Interior Minister MasoudAndrabi and NATO Resolute Support Commander Gen. Scott Miller in Kabul Monday.

He said the US supported an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process for a peaceful and stable Afghanistan and his country remained firmed in this regard.

The US defense chief said, “The only better way to reach this result is dialogue to have a political agreement.”

He said the presidential election result would have no impact on security agreement between the two countries.

He said the US mission has not changed in Afghanistan and their fight against terrorists would continue.

Meanwhile, Gen. Scott Miller said US troops had been reduced to 12,000 from 14,000 in Afghanistan.

Mark Esper also met President Ghani and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Abdullah Abdullah.
