KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): At least 18 Afghan Local Police (ALP) personnel have been killed and two others wounded in a Talibaninfo-icon attack in Kunduz province, an official said on Tuesday.

Amanullah Qureshi, the district’s administrative chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants stormed a security check-post in Arzbegi village of Aliabad district on Monday night.

He said eight ALP men were killed and their check-post destroyed. “Reinforcements sent to the area came under Taliban ambush and 10 personnel were killed and two wounded.”

The district chief said a tank belonging to ALP was also destroyed in the assault.

Habib Rahman, a family member of a slain ALP commander, said his brother Amir Mahmood was killed along with several other pro-government forces on Monday night.

Police chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Rashid told Pajhwok 16 pro-government fighters were killed in the overnight assault. He linked the ALP fatalities to negligence.

Taliban confirmed the clash. The group’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed killing 20 ALP men including three commanders -- Amir Mahmood, Sharbat Khani and Khoshal Khan.

Mujahid added two tanks, a motorcycle and several weapons belonging to the security forces were captured by the attackers.
