Afghan forces retake Darqad district, Taliban refute

Oct 25, 2019 - 14:08

TALOQAN (Pajhwok): Afghan security forces have retaken the control of Darqad district of northern Takhar province from Talibaninfo-icon militants after three months, an official said on Friday.

Takhar police spokesman Khalil Aseer told Pajhwok Afghan News that troops from the Afghan army’s 217 Pamir Military Corps conducted operations in Darqad district throughout last night and were able to capture the district until Friday morning.

He said the district was wrested back from Taliban insurgents who had been in control of the town for the last three months. Aseer said the Taliban retreated from the district center towards Zangal side – the border between Afghanistaninfo-icon and Tajikistan.

He said security forces were currently trying to expand their operations to other areas and drive insurgents from there. He said the forces were conducting a house to house search operation.

Haji Jamal, the 217 Pamir Corps spokesman, told Pajhwok that their forces retook control of all government buildings and installations from the insurgents in Darqad.

He said the Taliban sustained heavy losses during last night operations but they had no exact figures. However, he said bodies of some of the rebels were still lying on the ground.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the conflict in Darqad district but rejected the government had forces had retaken control of the town. Mujahid said the fighters remained in control of Darqad.
