JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Construction work on 14 school buildings has been left incomplete for the last 10 years in eastern Nuristan province, an official said Wednesday.

Educationinfo-icon Director Mohammad Amin Hamad told Pajhwok Afghan News that Nuristan has a total of 214 schools ---- 103 primary, 84 intermediate and 28 high schools.

He said 55 percent of the total schools have buildings and 74 percent are without buildings, adding work on construction of 40 schools was underway under Iqra program and 40 percent construction work has been completed.

According to Hamad, 151 more schools will get buildings under the Iqra program next year.

He, however, said funds for construction of 14 schools had been released 10 years back but the construction work could not be completed.

According to Hamad, 40,245 students, including 17,000 girls, get education in Nuristan.

Governor Hafiz Abdul Qayyum also acknowledged construction work of 14 schools for which funds had been discharged, remained in complete over the past 10 years.

He said the issue had been shared with the Education Ministry multiple times and efforts to arrest the contractor were being made by the Ministry of Interior.
