Kandahar police arrest 13 militants including target killers

KANDAHAR (Pajhwok): Police have arrested more than a dozen militants including five target killers during operations in the provincial capital and districts of southern Kandahar province, an official said on Wednesday.

The detainees were shown to media persons during a press conference at the police headquarters in Kandahar City, the provincial capital.

Kandahar police spokesman Jamal Nasir Barakzai said the 13 militants were detained during separate operations in the city and districts based on intelligence reports.

He said the detainees included five target killers involved in assassination of government officials and security personnel.

Barakzai said the detainees also included three landmine experts, three Talibaninfo-icon fighters and two Pakistani nationals, who he accused of spying and assisting the insurgents.  

He named the Pakistanis as Mesri Jan and Mohammad Abdullah., a resident of Pakistaninfo-icon’s Punjab province.  He said Abdullah worked as landmine making engineer with the Taliban. He was arrested in Maiwand district.

Previously, Pakistani nationals have been arrested in Kandahar on charges of terrorism.
