IEC hints at further delay in unveiling initial result

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): An Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) official on Friday hinted at further delay in the announcement of results from the presidential polls.

The election panel had earlier said the preliminary outcome would be unveiled on October 19 and the final results on November 7.

But due to some technical issues in sifting valid ballots from fraudulent ones, the commission could not announce the result on the due date.

Speaking to reporters at the IEC head office on Friday, IEC member Maulana Abdullah said: “Neither practical steps have been taken towards recounting votes nor teams sent to provinces for the purpose.”

Given the IEC capacity and problems in vote recount, the commissioner suggested, the possibility of further delay in announcement of the initial outcome could not be ruled out.

On the other hand, Fazal Ahmad Manawi, a leading member of the Stability and Coordination team, says the recount of votes in 2,432 ballot boxes is opposed by all sides except the government electoral group.

If the recount continues, he warns, the deadlock would persist. Several presidential runners and lawmakers have already voiced concern at the stand-off.
