KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Residents of southern Kandahar province rallied on Friday for the early initiation of intra-Afghan talks and an end to civilian casualties.

An organiser of the demonstration, Hikmatullah, told Pajhwok Afghan News similar rallies were simultaneously staged in Helmand, Zabul, Uruzgan, Herat, Balkh, Badghis, Nimroz, Jawzjan and Kunduz provinces.

Hundreds of civil societyinfo-icon activist, youth and tribal elders participated in the rallies, organised by the Afghanistaninfo-icon National Movement for Peace.

The main objective behind the rallies was to coordinate efforts for an end to the ongoing war and forging a national consensus on lasting peace in the country, Hikmatullah said.

“Today, we rallied in 13 provinces of Afghanistan to convey our demands to the warring sides and get a positive response from them,” he added.

Farid Ahmad, a participant of the demo, told Pajhwok that they took part in the protest to raise their voice for peace in their homeland.

The only way to durable stability in the country lay through intra-Afghan dialogue, the demonstrator believed. He urged cooperation on the issue from the global fraternity.

He underlined the need for a ceasefire to convince the people that the warring parties were really interested in steering the country out of the current situation.

In a resolution, the participants demanded a ceasefire, enforcement of peace, the start of intra-Afghan talks and an end to civilian casualties.
