Hostage release to help restart peace talks: Imran Khan

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistaninfo-icon Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday welcomed the release of two Western hostages in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

“We appreciate the steps taken by all involved to make it possible,” the prime minister tweeted soon after the release of the US and Australian professors.

Kevin King (US) and Timothy Weeks (Australia) were kidnapped by the Haqqani Networkinfo-icon in Kabulinfo-icon in August 2016.

Imran Khan said as part of the international community working to bring peace and end the suffering of the Afghans, Pakistan fully supported and facilitated the release.

He added Pakistan was supporting initiatives for a negotiated political settlement of the Afghan conflict.

“Pakistan hopes this step will boost the confidence of all parties to re-engage in the peace process,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to facilitating the Afghan peace process.
