Islamic scholars urge people to pay taxes timely

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A number of Islamic scholars on Sunday called on people to pay taxes timely in order to increase national revenue.

Around 150 Islamic scholars attended a conference in this regard in Kabul today (Sunday).

Maulviinfo-icon Abdul Shakor Shakiri, an Islamic scholar, told the event that giving taxes to government dated back to the time of Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him) and the taxes were for survival of government.

He said the Afghans wanted not to receive assistance from other countries and to see their country achieve sustainable situation, then they have to pay tax timely.

He said, “When the leader of the country demands people pay taxes, then it becomes mandatory on people.” He stressed the government should spend taxes on wellbeing of people.

Azizullah Mufleh, another scholar, expressed similar views and urged the government to prevent corruption and bribery in its institutions.

He urged all government officials not to take bribe as it damaged the tax collection system in the country. He said measures should be taken against those not paying taxes.

A number of other scholars held similar views and called on people to pay taxes timely.

At the end, the participants issued a resolution letter which emphasized on transparency in the taxes collection process.

It added the government should punish all those taking bribes in customs offices and during collecting taxes across the country.
