Russia, US coordinating Afghan peace efforts: Moscow

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Russia says the United States has not sent Moscow an official proposal to cooperate in fighting terrorism in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

However, Moscow says it maintains productive cooperation with Washington through the special representatives on Afghanistan, both bilaterally and multilaterally.

“We use these contacts to coordinate our approaches in order to create a favourable international environmentinfo-icon for putting an end to the armed confrontation in this country and launching direct peace talks between the opposing Afghan groups,” said Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Oleg Syromolotov.

He said another round of consultations between Russia, the United States and China, also attended by Pakistaninfo-icon, took place in Moscow on October 25 to discuss further steps to achieve a sustainable peace in Afghanistan through political and diplomatic means.

“In addition, we are focusing on fighting terrorism in Afghanistan as part of Russian-American counterterrorism dialogue, which is conducted at the deputy foreign minister level and at the level of experts from the relevant government agencies.”

Syromolotov said their frequent contacts made it possible to regularly exchange the assessments of threats in the region and agree on practical steps bilaterally and multilaterally, including at the UN, to cut them short and prevent them.
