KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Former president Hamid Karzai on Monday said he would not take part in intra-Afghan talks in China, following a request from President Ashraf Ghani.

Karzai made the remarks to media representatives here, alleging supporters of the peace process were being threatened.

He said Mullahinfo-icon Abdul Salam Zaeef, former Talibaninfo-icon ambassador to Pakistaninfo-icon, was first to receive threats.

Recently, some political analysts have also come under attack in Kabul. In such incidents, Wahid Muzhda was killed, Mohammad Hassan Haqyar injured and Nazar Mohammad Mutmain survived.

Karzai welcomed the Beijing meeting and hoped the intra-Afghan talks. Which were delayed several times, would take place in the near future.

The ex-president announced he would not participate the Beijing meeting. He said he had been asked by Ghani to skip the event. But the participation of other figures should not be prevented, he stressed.

“We call peace and freedom democratic values. We want peace but not at the cost of achievements made over the past 18 years. Our achievements mean Islamic democracy,” he remarked.

Responding to a question about the presidential election, he said: “The results should have been announced the day after the ballot was conducted… but this could be done in a truly free Afghanistaninfo-icon.”

The Afghan security forces were servants of the people and they should not be used for political and personal purposes, Karzai concluded.
