MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): A list of people accused of illegally occupying more than 50,000 acres of state land in northern Balkh will be shared with the media soon, an official said on Monday.

The provincial Urban Development and Land Department head, Shir Shah Hotak, told Pajhwok Afghan News during an exclusive interview that they had started preparing the list of land grabbers.

He said above 90,000 acres of land had been previously grabbed in Balkh but around 40,000 acres of the land was reclaimed from its encroachers.

Hotak said fake documents were used in most cases of land grabs in Balkh province during the past 70 years. Measures against land grabbers had been initiated by the central government, he added.

Hotak said two projects would be implemented on the retaken lands and it would positively impact the provincial revenue.

He said the Urban Development and Land Ministry was also working on listing land grabbers across the country and sharing the names with media.

He said: “We are also working in cooperation with police and the governor’s house to prepare the list of land grabbers in Balkh and once the list is completed, it would be shared with media soon.”

He said a number of businessmen, local officials, influential individuals and even common people were involved in land grabbing in Balkh province.

He said some individuals with the help of fake documents had grabbed land, urging people not to grab government land otherwise their department along with judicial organs would take legal action against them.
