In Takhar, rising crime graph sparks concerns

Dec 02, 2019 - 10:20

TALOQAN (Pajhwok): Residents and public representatives have voiced concerns at the rising crime graph in northern Takhar province, saying the security forces have failed to address the issue.

Naeem Rahimi, a social activist, told Pajhwok Afghan News crimes, including murders and robberies, had surged recently in the province.

Jamshed, a civil societyinfo-icon member, alleged unknown gunmen shot dead a moneychanger and decamped with his money in Taloqan last week.

He claimed many such incidents had happened over the past 10 days, triggering concerns among people. The government must tackle the situation, he stressed.

Hamid, a resident of Taloqan, said an increase in the number of illegal gunmen and unemployment had pushed up the crime graph.

Deputy Chairman of Provincial Council Azim Afzali told Pajhwok they were worried by a surge in crimes. Other residents held similar views.

Khalil Aseer, police spokesman, said about 192 suspects had been detained in connection with different crimes over the past eight months.

“Police have arrested 10 individuals in connection with various crimes in the past one week. We are striving to rein in the crime rate,” he added.

Aseer called on residents to help the security forces reduce combat crimes and make Takhar a safe place.
