HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The Talibaninfo-icon torched 27 telecom towers in western Herat province during the outgoing year, an official said on Monday.

Ashoqullah Alizai, the provincial Telecommunication and Information Technology director, said since the start of 2019 until now 27 telecom signals distributing towers of private telecommunication companies had been torched by the Taliban in different districts of the province especially in southern.

He said nearly 35 different groups posed threats to telecom facilities in Herat province.

“Threats from Taliban are high and have created several problems for progress of telecom sector in the province,” he said.

Alizai said as a result of mounting threats from different groups, telecom companies had to keep their towers non-functional during night.

He said talks with the Taliban through elders were one of the ways to resolve this problem.

Zamarai Hamdard, head of the Afghanistaninfo-icon Telecom Regulatory Authority (ATRA) in Herat, said insecure environmentinfo-icon remained a huge challenge for telecom companies in the province, calling 2019 the worst year for telecom companies in the country.

He said throughout the country the Taliban burnt down 978 telecom towers and set alight 45 telecom towers alone on the Election Day.

He said telecom services in Adraskan, Shindad, Obe, Pashton Zarghon and Farsi districts were weak because the Taliban had destroyed 27 telecom towers in these districts.

Governor Spokesperson Jilani Zwak said they had launched investigation to identify areas where telecom services were cut off.

Herat province comes second in terms telecom coverage after Kabulinfo-icon.
