SHARAN (Pajhwok): A number of recently created local army members in southeastern Paktika province on Tuesday said they remained unpaid for the last nine months and now faced economic problems.

Noor Mohammad (fake name), a local army member in Khairkot district, told Pajhwok Afghan News he has not received his salary for nine months.

He said, “I meet my family needs with my salary, but it is about one year we did not receive our salaries and shopkeepers and borrowers demand their money and have to hide from them.” He said a number of other members quitted job as they feared.

Abdulhaq Sulimankhel, another local army member, said he had not received his salaries for several months and as a result he faced multiple problems.

He said, “I’m originally from Janikhel district but my job is in Kharikot district, we have been without salaries for the last few months, we also lack uniform and weapons.”

Another member, Usman, told Pajhwok he was among 60 others who had not received their salaries for the past few months.

He said, “On a daily basis, the number of local army force is decreasing, if their salaries are not paid, the army will vanish.”

A number of other local army forces held similar views and asked the government to address their problem at the earliest possible.

Meanwhile, Aziz Aziz, a member of the provincial council, also confirmed the issue to Pajhwok and they had shared it with a delegation of the Ministry of Defence.

Ziar Khan Yad, the governor’s spokesman, said the local army forces had not paid salaries for nine months and the issue had been shared with the MoD and they would paid by new system soon.
