Ceasefire pre-condition for peace talks: Ghani

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Thursday said ceasefire was a precondition for peace talks and the Talibaninfo-icon should show their intension, capacity and determination in this regard.

The president expressed these views during a meeting with members of the Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon internal, security, counter-narcotics and international relations commissions.

Fida Mohammad Ulfat, who heads the internal security commission, briefed the president regarding the performance of his commission.

He said protection of the system was their priority and they will never allow anyone to take steps against the system.  

He said the Internal Affairs Commission would strengthen coordination with other institution as it was vital for this type of meetings.

Eng. Helmand Helmand, member of the International Relations Commission, also briefed the president regarding activities of his commission and said coordination among the three pillars of state was vital.

The president said this meeting opened a new chapter in relationship of the Wolesi Jirga and the Presidential Palace. The president hailed the performance of Wolesi Jirga and its members and commissions.

He pledged to continue formal meetings with other commissions of the lower house.

The president said a roadmap for better coordination among security institutions and the Wolesi Jirga had been finalized and would be implemented after its evaluation.

Ghani said a national consensus existed on peace and reconciliation, adding that every agreement on peace would be shared with the people.

He said ceasefire was a pre-condition for peace talks and the Taliban should show their intension, determination and capacity in this regard.

The president said he discussed the issue of terrorists safe havens with President Trump and a serious attention would be paid to it.

Ghani said peace in Afghanistaninfo-icon was linked to peace and stability of the region.
