Ghani hails Afghanistan friends for economic support

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Monday inaugurated the 8th Heart of Asia Istanbul Process Conference in Istanbul and lauded regional countries’ support for Afghanistaninfo-icon’s socio economic development.

Turkish President Reccep Tayyib Erdoğan and representatives of supporting countries attended the conference.

Recalling regional connectivity, President Ghani thanked international partners and Azerbaijan, China, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Russia, Tajikistan, India, Turkey and Turkmenistan for opening up business and transit corridors that included the Azeru Carridor and the Silk Road with China.

The president said by the virtue of these corridors Afghanistan was able to have $1billion exports in 2019.

The president thanked Iran and India for turning the Chabahar Port into a reality and lauded the US for exempting the Port from its sanctions.

“The US has been a foundational and reliable partner for the people and government of Afghanistan, a partnership based on mutual interests & mutual respect that has enabled us to move forward in confidence with a commitment to problem-solving and dealing with threats, creating and seizing opportunities,” he said

Ghani thanked the EU for its state-building compact, an outcome based approach that allows designing reforms on the basis of verifiable benchmarks.

He said Afghan products reached new markets and Afghanistan’s pine nuts exported to China. In addition, Afghan dry fruits and vegetables found their ways to Indian, Canadian, Finish, German, British and other markets.

He said Afghanistan became the closest distance for the transfer of Central Asia energy to the South Asia. The TAPI pipeline reached to Afghan borders and work on its portion in Afghanistan will begin next year.

The president appreciated the help of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in security, dialogue, trade and investment and added during his recent trip to Pakistaninfo-icon, he shared Afghanistan’s wish and future economic vision for massive transit and economic connectivity schemes in the region.

Ghani said after the 9/11 incident, a consensus for stable and democratic Afghanistan came into being and today was time to renew the consensus. “We the people of Afghanistan want to become a platform for regional cooperation and connectivity not a platform for short term interest and proxy conflicts.”

He stressed there was need for expanding cooperation and vision in fight against terrorism. Recalling the defeat of Daesh in the east of Afghanistan and killing of Daesh leader, the president said the slain leaders hailed from foreign countries particularly Pakistan.

The president told the participants that their experience in educationinfo-icon and fight against poverty was important and urged the international community to connect their education and technology institutions with Afghanistan.

The president said Afghan security forces were able to ensure the security of Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon and Presidential Elections and hoped that transparency in election would ensure its credibility and hoped that other candidates would bow to the election rules and regulations.

“I conclude my thanks to you—our partners and friends—by remembering the spirit of a great humanitarian and dear friend of Afghanistan, Dr. Tetsu Nakamura, who was tragically assassinated by terrorists last week.”

“They say the greatest love is that of a stranger. Dr. Nakamura exemplified the spirit of humanity, and demonstrated what an individual with vision and commitment can do.”
