17 pro-government militiamen killed in Takhar assault

TALOQAN (Pajhwok): Talibaninfo-icon militants have killed 17 pro-government fighters in northern Takhar province, an official said on Sunday.

Police spokesman Khalil Aseer told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants stormed a camp of local uprising members in Khwaja Bahauddin district late on Saturday night.

At least 17 pro-government forces were killed and seven others wounded in the overnight assault, he said, adding the militants also suffered casualties in the ensuing clash. But he stopped short of giving exact figures.

Jamshed, a resident of the area, said the insurgents attacked the militiamen led by Malik Tatar. “We have come to know that 20 pro-government were killed and some others wounded.”

The Taliban confirmed the assault. The group’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the rebels attacked security check-posts in Lala Guzar area of Khwaja Bahauddin district last night.

He claimed killing 21 security personnel, including a commander named Isa and wounding a number of others.

According to Mujahid, the Taliban suffered no casualties and a number of weapons and ammunition were seized by the group’s fighters.
