MEHTARLAM (Pajhwok): Work on building a public recreation park in Mehtarlam, the capital of eastern Laghman province, kicked off on Monday, officials said.

Laghman governor’s spokesman, Asadullah Dawlatzai, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the foundation stone of the public park named Salamzai was laid down on 153 acres of land in Mehtarlam city.

Nazifullah Alokozay, Mehtarlam mayor, said the park would cost 219 million afghanis.

He said 119 million afghanis of the cost were provided by the municipality and 100 million afghanis by the private sector. The park would have many facilities and would take three years to complete, he added.

Alokozay said a five-star hotel, a water pool, concreted roads and many shops would be also constructed in the park.

He added 80 percent of workers on the project would be those who were internally displaced or returned to the country so they were provided work opportunity.

Laghman governor Mohammad Asif Nang said the park was an important step of the local administration and asked municipality to keep quality and speed in its work on the project.

He also directed local security officials to bring to justice those trying to grab land or violate the law in Laghman.
