Substandard materials being used in road construction

Substandard materials being used in road construction

Jan 05, 2020 - 16:16

PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): Substandard materials are being used in the construction of a road in the capital of northern Baghlan province, public representatives alleged on Sunday.

Provincial Council (PC) member Bismillah Atash claimed 70 percent of the shingle being used in building the Qahwa Khana road in Pul-i-Khumri was mountain soil.

While inspecting the project, he told Pajhwok Afghan News: “The contractor and other officials concerned should be grilled on the issue.”

The contract is worth 15 million afghanis, according to the council member, who believed that corruption was the reason behind the use of inferior materials.

He called on the mayor to spend the funds on an appropriate scheme instead of the worthless project.

Mohammad Hanif, another PC member, agreed the previous road was better than what was going on. He also underlined the need for the judicious use of public funds.

Meanwhile, Mayor Nizamuddin Hameedi rejected the claims of the provincial council members and insisted the road was being constructed to the standards set in the contract.

“Whatever the public representatives say, I respect the view and criticism of technical analysts. I don’t heed claims from non-professional people,” he remarked.

But the mayor said quality materials were being used in road construction. The mountain rocks placed in the bed of the road were also appropriate, he added.

A worker on the project, who declined to be named, alleged garbage had also been used for filling in addition to stones and mountain soil..

Projects officials refused to comment on the allegation of corruption and use of poor-quality materials in the construction of the road.
