PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): A key dry port in Pakistaninfo-icon’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which will be linked to Afghanistaninfo-icon, is set to be inaugurated later this week.

Prime Minister Imran Khan is due in Nowshera on January 8 to inaugurate the Azakhel Pirpiai Dry Port -- the second biggest facility of the kind in Pakistan.

Pakistan Railways Chief Traffic Officer Haroonur Rasheed was quoted as saying on Monday development work on the dry port, initiated in June 2016, was to be completed in February 2020

But the project was executed one month ahead of the scheduled time. The official said the dry port was of great importance for traders and businessmen.

The Pakistan Railways acquired 64 acres of land for the port, whose first phase has been developed over 28 acres of land at a cost of Rs500 million. A facilitation centre for the one-window operation has already been set up.

Through the Azakhel Pirpiai Dry Port, transit trade goods will be transported to Afghanistan. The port will be linked to Afghanistan through the Peshawar Ring Road.
