Jan 11, 2020 - 08:35

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistaninfo-icon’s federal minister for railways has suggested the addition of the Peshawar-Jalalabad railroad to the ML-1 track to boost regional trade.

The Peshawar-Jalalabad rail project would connect Pakistan with Afghanistaninfo-icon and Central Asian republics, Sheikh Rashid told the inaugural ceremony for a dry port in Nowshera district.

On Friday, Prime Minister Imran Khan inaugurated the Azakhel dry port, completed at a cost of Rs510 million. Rashid earmarked funds for the construction of the dry port.

The dry port would promote trade activities and yield employment opportunities, besides speeding up the transportation of goods to landlocked Afghanistan.

Passing through the Loi Shalman area of Khyber tribal district, mountainous terrains and beautiful landscapes of the province, the proposed railway line would help promote tourism, Rashid said.

The minister added an agreement had been inked with the National Logistic Cell (NLC) to include the Peshawar-Jalalabad track in the ML-1 and thereby minimise smuggling and create jobs for 100,000 people.
