Kunar residents urge govt-Taliban truce

Jan 22, 2020 - 17:47

ASADABAD (Pajhwok): A number of religious scholars and youths during a peaceful protest in eastern Kunar province on Wednesday urged the government and Talibaninfo-icon militants to declare ceasefire for long-lasting peace in the country.

Dozens of clerics and youths gathered in Asadabad City, the provincial capital, and urged the warning parties to announce general ceasefire for lasting peace across the country.

Abdul Basir, a protestor, said: “We don’t want further war but want permanent truce and long-lasting peace.”

He said continuation of war could not bring the ongoing conflict to an end, saying both the government and Taliban militants should arrive at the negotiation table.

He added the entire nation was tired of the ongoing conflict and the Taliban should not chose clash over dialogue for reaching their aim.

Mualvi Ajmal, a religious scholar, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the international community should bring pressure on Afghanistaninfo-icon’s neighbors to honestly support and cooperate with the Afghan peace process.

He said the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan was spearheaded by foreign intelligence groups and the war had no place in Islam.

Ziaur RahmanYar, another Islamic scholar, said their protest was aimed at calling on the warning parties to declare truce for permanent peace in the country.

A number of other scholars and youths expressed similar views and urged the government and Taliban militants to announce a nationwide ceasefire as soon as possible.
