KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Despite President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani’s pledge to bring down corruption in the country, Afghanistaninfo-icon ranks among top 10 corrupt countries on the Transparency International (TI) Corruption Perceptions Index 2019, the Integrity Watch Afghanistan (IW) said on Thursday.

IW Head Syed Akram Afzali told reporters here despite a lot of efforts corruption has not been eradicated from the country, therefore, Afghanistan gained 16 points in the fight against corruption.

He said soon after the formation of the Unity Government, President Ghani pledged that he would reduce the level of corruption and strives to get as much as 50 marks.

Afzali said efforts had been made to eradicate corruption, but the level of corruption has increased and Afghanistan is among top 10 corrupt countries.

Specific circles within the system held power that served personal interest instead of national interest, this is why corruption was on the rise, he said.

Afzali said this year's budget is unfair because it was approved on the bases of a deal between the executive and legislators.

The IWA head suggests the role of cash should be eliminated in the politics, fight against corruption should be institutionalized, awareness against corruption should be spread and public should be encouraged for cooperation.

He expressed concern that Commission to deal with corruption has not been formed and political interference in many areas continued.
