KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): An inclusive political settlement to the war in Afghanistaninfo-icon, protecting, the US homeland from terrorist attacks, remains the principal goal of the American strategy, says the Pentagon.

In its latest semiannual report to the Congress, the Department of Defence said on Thursday Special Representative Zalmay Khalilzad led the effort for a political settlement with the Talibaninfo-icon

It added the military mission in Afghanistan remained in support of diplomatic campaign to achieve such a lasting political settlement and conducting counterterrorism operations.

Titled “Enhancing Security and Stability in Afghanistan, the report covers events from June 1 to November 30, 2019.The report was submitted in accordance with requirements from 2015 National Defense Authorisation Act.

During the reporting period, US Forces-Afghanistan and coalition allies and partners supported the Afghan security forces in a focused military campaign against the Taliban to pave the way for reconciliation and counterterrorism efforts. 

“Challenges within the ANDSF such as corruption, attrition and executing logistic planning, remain a focus of advisory efforts at all levels,” he DoD report said. 

NATOinfo-icon’s Resolute Support mission took steps to optimise its advising mission to better align advisors across Afghanistan, it said, noting improved communication between the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Interior.

Better coordination between the ministries helped rein in violence during Afghanistan’s presidential election and led to successful operations against Daesh in Nangahar province. 

“The US remains fully committed to the Resolute Support mission and our Afghan partners, as we work to ensure Afghanistan never again become a safe haven for terrorists,” the report concluded.
