PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Installation of tracking and monitoring devices on all vehicles carrying cargoes Afghan transit trade goods from February 1, a Pakistani newspaper reported on Friday.

An unnamed customs official was quoted as saying: “Presently, the consignments are not containerised and tracking devices not installed on vehicles carrying such goods.”

From February 1, the official told The News, all export goods (except fresh fruits and vegetables) from Afghanistaninfo-icon would be in containers of international specifications and would also be secured through tracking device and seals.

The decision on installation of tracking device has been taken in compliance with the Afghan-Pakistaninfo-icon Transit Trade Agreement of 2010, according to the news report.

Earlier in the month, all parties concerned, including Customs clearing agents, terminal operators, shipping agents, bonded carriers, transport operators and other stakeholders were informed of the changes.

Meanwhile, the government is studying various proposals to introduce amendments to the Transit Trade Agreement to minimise chances of goods in transit being pilfered.
