KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The first-ever deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) laboratory started functioning at the Laboratory Complex of the Forensic Medical Department that was opened in capital Kabul on Sunday

DNA test helps identify individual gens and could help in genetic research and information collection.

Addressing a gathering, Public Healthinfo-icon Minister Ferozuddin Feroz said Afghanistaninfo-icon had so far dispatched DNA related tests to Canada, which was a time-consuming process.

He said with opening of the DNA lab, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) would be able to identify criminals, burned bodies and collect other necessary genetic information.

Feroz said the ministry would soon organize workshops for employees of the Ministry of Interior and the Attorney General Office regarding DNA and its importance.

Chief Executive Advisor Abdullah Abdullah said in the aftermath of growing crimes in the country, the opening of a DNA testing lab was a positive step.

He stressed security of professionals working in the lab and said no one should be allowed to interfere in these matters.

“We need an independent Forensic Medical Department. Any kind of interference in this profession is a huge treason and this way, we cannot implement the law,” said Abdullah.
