PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): Parts of Karkan coalmine in northern Baghlan province have caught fire, claimed coalminers on Sunday, who warned of a massive blast if the government did not pay attention.

Tens of coalminers gathered in front of the provincial Mining Department, seeking help to control the blaze.

Mohammad Azeem, a coalminer, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “For the last six months, the government has been silent about the undecided future of Baghlan coalmines. Finally due to government’s negligence, fire has erupted.” He said it was their fourth protest but the authorities did not hear their voices.

Amanullah, another coalminer, said fire had broken out in the Karkan coalmine’s fourth part. The workers have been evacuated safely, but there was nothing to put out the fire.

Eng. Shah Mohammad Faizan, head of the Baghaln Mining Department, said the coalmines had been handed over to the Northern Enterprises, therefore he would not comment.

Fida Mohammad Tashi, head of the Baghlan Coalmines, also refused to comment on the fire incident, but governor’s spokesperson Nazir Najam said the governor had talked with the mining minister regarding the future of coalmine who had pledged to take decision in this regard soon.

Four points have been identified as coalmine spots in Baghlan which is used for production of Ghori Cement only.
