KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Thousands of people took part in a farewell ceremony for Tetsu Nakamura, a Japanese physician who was killed in Jalalabad last month.

The memorial drew about 5,000 people who paid respects the slain doctor for his enormous contribution to the development of eastern Afghanistaninfo-icon, the Japan Times reported.

Speaking on the occasion, his son Ken Nakamura said: “Our family wishes greenery to spread throughout Afghanistan, as my father hoped,”

The doctor, who headed the Afghan unit of the Peshawar-kai aid group, and five Afghans were shot dead on December 4 when their vehicle came under gun attack in Jalalabad.

Afghan Ambassador to Japan Bashir Mohabbat was among attendees of the ceremony at Seinan Gakuin University’s chapel in Fukuoka. He hailed Nakamura as a hero.

Nakamura had spent years in the war-ravaged country, providing humanitarian support and helping with water and tree-planting projects in the region.
