Pakistan reopens Torkham gate after 10 hours

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Pakistaninfo-icon reopened the Torkham Crossing Gate late on Wednesday after 10 hours of closure, allowing stranded passengers to proceed, an official said.

Torkham Mayor Rahat Gul Zyarmal told Pajhwok Afghan News Pakistan closed the Torkham gate after rockets landed on both sides of the crossing.

Pakistan Foreign Office said the gate was closed for security reasons after two mortar shells were fired from Afghanistaninfo-icon.

Two mortar shells were fired into Pakistan from the Afghanistan territory, said Foreign Office spokesperson Aisha Farooqui on Wednesday. No casualties were reported.

"The matter is being coordinated with Afghan authorities," Farooqui said in a statement, adding that the gate is likely to be opened soon.

Nangarhar Governor Spokesperson Attaullah Khogyani said Pakistan closed the Torkham gate early on Wednesday due to security reasons.

A large number of passengers, including womeninfo-icon and children, were stranded on both sides of the gate.
