Coronavirus: 30-bed isolation ward opens in Kabul

Jan 30, 2020 - 19:14

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Public Healthinfo-icon on Thursday announced opening a 30-bed isolation ward at Kabul Antoni hospital for Coronavirus patients.

MoPH surveillance coordinator Dr. Tawfiq Hakim Nazari told Pajwhok Afghan News at the Kabul airport that medical teams had been tasked with testing people coming from China at all airports.

He said facilities for testing infectious diseases were already available at all airports of the country but they took special measures for prevention of Coronavirus.

He said a 30-bed facility for Coronavirus patients had been opened at Antoni hospital and if the number of such patients increased, such facilities would be opened in other hospitals.

He said measures were in place for testing of Coronavirus in zonal hospitals in Kabul, Kandahar, Herat and Ballkh provinces and four international airports and dry ports.

He said during the past 48 hours, 59 passengers arrived from China and none was tested positive for Coronavirus.

Known as “2019-nCoV”, the newly identified coronavirus has created alarm because it is spreading quickly and there are still important unknowns surrounding it, such as its lethality and whether it is infectious before symptoms show.

It emerged late last year in Wuhan, a major transportation hub and capital of central Hubei province with a population of 11 million people. China has since moved to lock down most of Hubei, with a population around the same as Italy.

The deadly virus has killed over 140 people and infected up to 5,000 in China.
