KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Justice says at least 796 children are currently being held in juvenile correction centres.

In a statement, the ministry said these children included 772 boys and 22 girls. It said 247 children were kept in Kabul correction centre, 109 in Herat and 55 others in Nangarhar.

The statement said 239 children were held and transferred to these centres in connection with robberies and 612 others in connection with other crimes.

The crimes these children had committed included murder, sodomy, drug trafficking, conflict, adultery, armed robbery, traffic accidents, kidnapping, weapon trafficking and forgery, the source added.

“Of the 796 children held at correction facilities across the country, 61 are held for suspicion, 123 face accusations, cases of 612 children are sub-judice and the remaining 45 are convicted,” the statement explained.

The children, who committed crimes when aged between 12 and 17 years, are kept in correction centres.
