740 poultry farms set up this year, ministry says

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): At least 750 small and big poultry farms have been established in the country in the current fiscal year, says the Ministry of Agricultureinfo-icon, Irrigation and Livestock (MoAIL).

The MoAIL said Afghanistaninfo-icon attained 80 percent self-sufficiency in poultry production last year. The number would grow further this year, the ministry hoped.

Akbar Rostami, spokesman for the ministry, said: “Of the 740 poultry farms, 70 are commercial. Ten of the 70 farms have the capacity of keeping 10,000 chickens at a time.”

Each of the remaining 60 farms had the capacity of keeping 50,000 chickens at a time, the officials explained

Rostami said the ministry set up 679 poultry farms in the solar yearinfo-icon 1398 to boost womeninfo-icon’s economy. The chicken included broilers and egg-laying hens.

He said 60 commercial broiler chickens farms had been established with support from the private sector in 16 provinces -- Kabul, Nangarhar, Kandahar, Balkh, Kunduz, Kunar, Laghman, Parwan, Logar, Khost, Samangan, Paktia, Jawzjan, Helmand, Herat and Farah.

About 10 big commercial farms of broiler chicken had been set up in Kabul, Nangarhar, Herat, Kunduz and Balkh provinces, the spokesman concluded.
