MAIMANA (Pajhwok): The Talibaninfo-icon have dug huge ditches at several points on the Maimana-Andkhoi Road to create hurdles for security forces convoys, said drivers and an official on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Abdul Karim Yourish told Pajhwok Afghan News the Taliban used heavy machinery to dig ditches on the Maimana-Andkhoi Road in Dawlatabad district.

The National Directorate of Security (NDSinfo-icon) also acknowledged the issue and said by doing so, the Taliban wanted to create barriers for security forces convoys.

NDS officials said the Shaheen Military started their operation 112 from Khawaja Sabzposh district but it had no positive outcome so far.

The Maiman-Andkhoi road has been under Taliban control for the past two years. The group has established permanent check-points at five points and two customs check points.

Last year, the Tailban also placed barriers on the highway in Shireen Tagab and Dawlatabad districts.

Eng. Ghulam Farooq, head of roads and highways protection authority, said damaging roads was a huge treason and the Taliban damaged both sides of the road last night.

A number of drivers on the road acknowledged the Taliban had created hurdles on the highway.

Wishing anonymity, one of the drivers, said: “The Taliban have dug the road from four to five metres deep, few vehicles who were unaware of the ditches had accidents.”

A Taliban military official confirmed to Pajhwok that they had dug the road in order to create hurdles for military convoys.
