Ghani inaugurates CASA-1000 project implementation

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Thursday inaugurated work on transmission lines as part of CASA-1000 project in Sarobi district of capital Kabul during a special ceremony also attended by foreign ambassadors.

President Ghani called CASA-1000 project as important for connecting central and southern Asian countries through electricity and asked people to help ensure security for implementation of the project.

Afghanistaninfo-icon would attain regional support in playing the role of a bridge in connecting neighboring countries and boost commerce cooperation among regional states, he added.

Amanullah Ghalib, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) or power utility general said that the project would transmit electricity from central Asia to southern Asia.

Under the project, which was launched in May last year, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan will supply 1,300 MW of electricity to Pakistan (1,000 MW) and Afghanistan (300 MW).

Ghalib said the project would pass through Kunduz, Panjsher, Kapisa, Kabul, Laghman and Nangarhar provinces and Afghanistan would earn $40 million to $45 million in transit fee annually.

He said the project would cost $225 million in Afghanistan territory and would be financed by the Worldinfo-icon Bank.

The project would start from Kyrgyzstan and reach Pakistaninfo-icon after crossing a 1,250 kilometers distance in Tajikistan and Afghanistan, he said, adding that 575 kilometers of the project would pass from Afghanistan and it would be implemented by KEC and KPTL Indian companies.

Ghalib said the project would complete in March 2022. Extension of OPGW internet lines along power cables and digitalizing CASA-1000 project were other advantages of the scheme, he added.

Sharafuddin Imaminfo-icon, who attended the ceremony, said the project would strengthen relations between southern and central Asian countries.

He hoped member countries in the project would cooperate with each other because it would boost stability in the region.
