No female MD doctor in Nuristan districts to serve people

No female MD doctor in Nuristan districts to serve people

Feb 10, 2020 - 14:04

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): There is no female Doctor of Medicine (MD) in eastern Nuristan province apart from the one serving in Paroon, the provincial capital, an official said on Monday.

Dr. Zakiullah Storai, head of the Public Healthinfo-icon Department said this during an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News.

The lack of transportation facilities between Paroon and other districts has affected the provision of health services in the far-flung areas of the province, he added.

He said the province has been divided into three parts --- central, eastern and western --- due to the lack of transportation facilities, adding that people had to reach to the centre via Laghman or Kunar provinces, therefore, medical equipment and medicines could not be reached to the province in time.

There are 24 medical centres in Nuristan, said Storai, three functions on district level and the remaining are functional on regional level equipped with primary, secondary and mobile medical facilities.

He said there was no security threat in the way of health facilities, adding that there were still some areas the people of which are deprived of health facilities.

Storai said he recently received resources from the ministry through which areas without health facilities would be covered by mobile health facilities.

He said there were female nurses and midwives in all Nuristan health centres who cooperate with mothers during child birth, but there was no female MD doctor in any Nuristan district.

He said all health resources were at the disposal of individuals who did not have information from the geography of Nuristan nor they understood the real problems of the masses.

Dr. Storari said work on a plan was underway to unearth all problems faced by the health sector and share them with the centre.
