HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The National Directorate of Security (NDSinfo-icon) personnel have detained more than 50 suspected terrorists in western Herat province, an official said on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference at the NDS office here, Governor Abdul Qayyum Rahimi said the suspects were arrested by intelligence operatives over the past two months.

Rahimi claimed the security forces also seized a cache of weapons belonging to militants in the Zinda Jan district of the province.

He said the weapons included 18 Kalashnikovs, one rocket, two machine guns, five pistols, 50 magazines, 37 hand grenades, two vehicles, a bike and thousands of bullets.

Meanwhile, a number of citizens praised the achievement of the intelligence agency. However, they said Herat City and districts were still facing security threats.

Resident Ghulam Hussain, 44, told Pajhwok: “NDS is striving; but the security situation has deteriorated even Herat City. Two days ago gunmen opened fire at a police officer and killed one policeman before fleeing.”

Fareed Ahmad, another resident, said the spy network should work harder to rein in robberies in the city. People were unable to move freely after 7pm, he concluded.
